Experience and Qualifications
Paula is a highly accomplished tax lawyer with over 19 years’ experience specialising in complex tax controversy, litigation and risk management across the UK and international markets. She joined Toremis in March 2026 and brings a depth of technical and litigation expertise rarely found outside specialist disputes practices.
Paula began her career at HMRC, spending nine years as a solicitor advising on direct tax, EU law and public law; drafting primary and secondary legislation; and managing extensive litigation portfolios before the First‑tier Tribunal, appellate courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union. She went on to hold senior roles at Baker McKenzie, Grant Thornton and EY, where she advised multinational groups on high‑value disputes involving transfer pricing, diverted profits tax, permanent establishment, corporate residence, financial instruments and cross‑border structures.
Paula is recognised for her resolution‑focused and technically rigorous approach; her deep litigation and HMRC‑facing experience means that she brings a disputes‑driven perspective that is particularly valuable in analysing and insuring complex tax-contingent risks.
